On her way home after being dumped by her boyfriend of seven years, Honda Kaoru picks up a black lump she assumes is a cat. But its true identity turns out to be… a creature that speaks human language and even enjoys drinking alcohol—a cat(?)!? Kaoru names the strange being Modoki, who stubbornly insists he’s a cat, and the two begin living together. As Kaoru spends her days with Modoki, her bleak, worn-down everyday life slowly starts to change…?
